Part 2 of Carla’s Journey to Wholeness
Carla Mendoza of NaturaLean Belize.
Andrea: We spoke about wholeness in our earlier conversation and how body, mind, and spirit come together to complete us and help us realize your purpose and passion.” What is your definition of wholeness and why is this such an important message for you to share with others?
Carla: My definition of Wholeness is: “True Wholeness is when we accept that we are made in God’s image and begin to treat our bodies as the temples of the Holy Spirit, body, mind and spirit. Our bodies, minds, emotions and spirits must work in unity toward God’s plan. This then leads us to being in the right position of surrender of self, to seek God will, and find our purpose and passion.”
I would say I stumbled onto this one, when I started to change my lifestyle.I was born and raised in a Christian home. My father was a Pastor, I grew up hearing, loving and applying the Word of God, except when it came to the physical aspect. I was never a wild child, you could say I was an exemplary Christian but when it came to my health, it was like, anything goes with food. As long as you pray for it , it was sanctified and you could eat it and it wouldn’t do any harm. That was the mentality in my home, food portions didn’t matter, you just ate what you wanted to eat.
She began to work on the physical and she said it was not an easy task. She had to fight daily and be disciplined as she tried to get rid of old habits and cravings. Each day she fought and became victorious and that was when she started to sense a shift in her life.
Carla: I began to feel the presence of God in my life more. I began to feel loved, appreciated, and cherished. Looking back at that time, I realized that if we don’t have the physical component along with the spiritual as well as the emotional and mental we will never be able to fully understand and know the purpose for God for our lives because we are choosing to live for self and not for God. We are choosing for our lives and our bodies what we want for it, not what God has for it. I’ve never studied this topic of wholeness but I have lived it and because I have lived it, I can speak about it from that level because I realize that, after I took care of the physical, the emotionally part began to show up saying, “I’m over here, you haven’t taken care of me yet.” You still have that part of your life, that anger or that resentment, little by little I started to take care of that, prayed, let go, give it all to God and little by little I emerged from that journey, a person who felt whole, who felt complete, who saw their bodies in the eyes of Christ and not in the eyes of anybody else and I was here to do what God wanted me to do, even if I had no company at all. This is when I realized that wholeness was the message God wanted me to share but I had to go through the whole physical weight loss, emotional loss, and baggage loss to be able to put it together to realize that wholeness is what we need the most in our Christian lives. And that is what is missing in many lives.
Carla: When I was 29 I was tired all the time, feet hurt, back hurt, barely making it to 3 pm, I wanted to go home and the workday wasn’t done yet and now at 33, I actually feel younger than I’ve ever felt before. No sugar, no junk food, chocolate, no quick fixes to get me through the day. I depend on natural, wholesome foods, which is what my body needs as fuel. I even look younger, there is a vibrance and glow that wasn’t there before. My body is actually happy, it’s like a new car. It vibrates, it radiates, it glows because it’s working so perfectly in alignment with God’s purpose for our physical bodies. Many people say that God only has a plan for our spiritual side. God has a plan for us for every aspect even in the physical and if we change our lifestyle to match God’s lifestyle then His purpose will come through. This is how I found out God’s purpose for me. When I fixed the physical, and I realized how much the demand was for that out there and I fixed the emotional, I just gave it to God. I forgave what had hurt me in the past, I asked God to forgive me for the mistakes I made. I realized I had been doing it all wrong and I wanted to start fresh. I wanted to start over. I started to see things in a new light. What I accepted before, I just couldn’t accept anymore. What I had allowed in my life, there was no way I would allow it past the door, you start to see things in a whole new way because the Holy Spirit has now come in and the Holy Spirit has been given complete control of my life.
She now had to make a decision about her teaching career, she loved teaching but she felt that it was holding her back from fully pursuing the call of God on her life. The decision had to be made, would she leave her secure pay check and follow God even if she didn’t know where He was leading? Carla made the leap of faith and quit her teaching job.
Carla: Somebody told me that I’m making a big mistake, because that is a secure paycheck I’m leaving and that I don’t know what I’m getting into. I told her that the same God that is calling me out, He will provide my water and my bread, because the Word of God says He will provide my bread and water and it shall be sure. Now, I’m here in my own office in San Ignacio, working as a food coach as a motivational speaker, speaking all over, wherever I go, I want to share this message with people. God has been faithful to me. He revealed His purpose to me but before that I had to take care of the physical, all the emotions, the anger, the guilt, the shame, all that was holding me back so I could embrace the spiritual.
Andrea: What are some Scriptures you held on to throughout this journey?
Carla: As I was letting go of the food, I began to hunger for the Word of God. I read the Bible cover to cover, like never before. Some of the verses that I held on to were:
Jeremiah 29:11 – “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
John 10:10 “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”
Romans 12:2 “ Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.
One was for me personally and one was for the purpose He had called me for, to take away those people the enemy was killing with sickness and diseases and so I realized that my purpose was bigger than I imagined and that I maybe I was here to punch sickness in the face and to prevent sickness in this country because that’s how they will learn more about who they truly are and that God truly loves them and wants to heal them and restore them but they must yield and surrender their cravings and themselves to the Lord.
Andrea: What encouragement do you have for the women in this space?
Carla: We are so used to being the one that does everything, for the husband, the children etc and it’s so easy to get lost in all those things that we feel we are supposed to be doing and we neglect our care, we neglect ourselves and we become run down, our hormones become imbalanced, we can’t function the way we’re supposed to and that’s something I dealt with myself. You reach a point where you can’t anymore, you don’t have the energy at the end of the day. I want to tell every woman, take care of yourself, if you take time for yourself, you’re going to be eating right, you’re going to have emotional stability and the energy to take care of everybody else plus some more. The Bible says, “Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness.” Taking care of yourself is also a part of the purpose for your life. He wants you to take care of your health so that He can use you to fulfill the purpose the God He created you for.
Andrea: Could you share a little about F.L.Y – First Love Yourself?
Carla: The idea came about my own experience because the last thing I was doing was taking care of myself, I was taking care of everybody else. After 4 years in this journey, I was flying, I was at another level and I came up with “Learn to FLY” when you first love yourself, it works. When you start taking care of yourself, you have the motivation, the energy, the willpower, everything you need, the weapons to be able to do what God has called you to do. But if you don’t take care of yourself, you’ll probably never reach the point because your emotions will get in the way, your body, your health will get in the way and so you will never learn to fly, you get held back instead, you get grounded, and you never get to fly to your purpose. So if you first love yourself, you get light, you get your wings, your motivation, you find what moves you, and then God can show you His purpose and bring in disciples and do all that the Kingdom has for you to do.
Andrea: I noticed that you are bold in sharing your faith. What motivates you to be so bold in sharing your faith in your business?
Carla: I’ve always been shy, I’ve been an observer most of my life until I had an experience with a little boy in a hospital room that was dying from a tumor. God used this little boy to show me, Jesus Christ. Since that day that little boy died, I woke up a different person. It woke up a desire to speak about Christ. I was never the same after that experience. I began to feel a deeper connection to heaven, to Jesus. It was an amazing experience in my life. My purpose became even clearer. I have been challenged by others, telling me that I need to separate God from my business, I have been told that I can’t make money using God, honestly, I have tried but it doesn’t feel right to me, It doesn’t feel right to separate my life by compartments, the spiritual and the work side. I’m a whole person who believes in Jesus Christ, therefore His love and light should permeate in everything I do. If I’m not bold, then who will?
He has given me the opportunity to speak so I speak.
Carla wants you to know, “From head to toe, you are marvelous, and deserve the best God has to offer : physically, emotionally and spiritually.”
